Walking down the street, one might occasionally encounter eyes that appear overly prominent or tired, as if they haven't fully opened.
This is often due to an unnaturally thick double eyelid crease, commonly referred to as ‘sausage eyes’. As the number of double eyelid surgeries increases, so do these types of side effects.
Sausage eyes, one of the most common side effects of eye reoperation, typically occur when the double eyelid line is set too high or when ptosis (droopy eyelid) is not perfectly corrected.
While sausage eyes might initially appear swollen, they are distinctly different. Generally, swelling subsides over a certain period, but the thickness of sausage eyes does not change with time.
To correct sausage eyes, various factors must be addressed. According to Dr. Do Eon-rok [pictured], chief director of 1mm Plastic Surgery, existing scars need to be covered, and the high double eyelid line must be appropriately lowered.
The timing of the surgery is also crucial; at least six months should have passed since the initial operation. Dr. Do explains, ‘This is because the eyelid skin, muscles, and scar tissue have sufficiently stabilized and softened by then, allowing for the best reoperation results.’
As it is a reoperation, even greater caution is required. This is because the individual's eyelid condition, thickness, and amount of fat differ significantly from the initial surgery. It is especially important to thoroughly discuss with a specialist what kind of eye shape is desired and what aspects need improvement in the current state.
Furthermore, it is wise to choose a hospital that provides personalized care, from consultation to post-operative management. Dr. Do emphasizes, ‘Since the eyes are a key indicator that influences a person's impression, it is crucial to receive an accurate diagnosis from a skilled surgeon with extensive clinical experience in reoperation and from a specialized hospital.’
